| Interislander ferry to South Island | |
|---|---|
| From Martinborough we drove the 84km to Wellington. Takes longer than you think because Highway 2 is mountainous and hair raising! The approach to Wellington sees you in familiar surroundings, commuter traffic and dual carriageways. Make sure the hire vehicle is topped up before you reach the ferry terminal because fuel stops are few and far between and the town itself is very busy at peak times. The Interislander takes you across the Cook Strait and into Marlborough Sounds (did people really negotiate sailing craft through this maze?), a spectacular journey. The Strait can be very rough apparently but we experienced a very smooth ride. | |

The Sounds provide many photo opportunities and is a difficult passage even with the latest navigation aids. |
| The destination on the South Island is Picton, a beautiful port come resort. The hire car was waiting for us and the change over proved easy. This emphasised the need to pre-book and Avis were helpful and efficient and supplied excellent vehicles. | |
