Miscellaneous items:
Speedometers/odometers are not covered in the test and will not cause the vehicle to fail if they are not working. However, the tester may issue an advisory document to say the speedo was not functioning at the time of test where this is obvious, so that if an appeal is raised at some time in the future there will be a record at the testing station indicating the speedo didn't work at the time. The mileage/Km covered since the test is an important factor in deciding what condition that component was in originally, when it comes to an appeal (an appeal can be made against the condition of mechanical components within a month of the test or in the case of corrosion, within 3 months of the test).
Speedometers must be calibrated in Mph for use in the UK but this aspect is not part of the test. Where the odometer shows Kilometres this figure will be inserted in the mileage box of the pass certificate (VT20) and the word "mileage" crossed out and "Km" substituted.
Instrument panel lighting is also exempt from the MOT, although the speedo' illumination should be operating when used on the road during darkness. Main beam warning lamps are not testable either.
Airbag warning lamps are not part of the test, however the tester may consider the vehicle dangerous (a good idea!) and refuse to carry out the test.
