Rear view mirrors:

The number and position of rear view mirrors depends on the type of vehicle and its date of first use:

• Cars first used before 1st August 1978 need one mirror mounted on the offside, nearside or centre.
• Cars used on or after this date need two mirrors, one of which must be on the offside.
• All goods vehicles (including car derived vans) must have two mirrors one of which must be on the offside.

It must be possible to adjust these mirrors to give a view to the rear.

Additional mirrors i.e those over and above the legal minimum above, are not testable.

Electrically operated mirrors are not required to work but must be adjustable (you can do this manually in most cases) to give a view to the rear.

Obligatory mirrors (see Additional mirrors above) which are missing, damaged or deteriorated so they seriously impair the view to rear or are insecure are reasons for failure.
