Suspension system:

The MOT testers Manual illustrates six different suspension types in section 2 page 29. Hydrogas/pneumatic systems and Macpherson struts must be checked on turning plates by shaking the wheel vigorously from the 12 o'clock and 3/9 o'clock positions to highlight play in joints and bushes.

Play in pins/bushes should not exceed:

12mm dia - 2mm

25mm dia - 3mm

10% of the diameter over these sizes.

Rubber bushes which exhibit similar amounts of movement would also fail.

There must be adequate clearance from the bump stop and no fouling of the road wheels must occur or be likely if laden.

Over-heating of suspension components by welding or heating is not permissable in most cases.

Leaks from hydraulic or gas suspension would be reasons for failure as would missing locking devices, split pins/lock washers etc.

Missing or broken bolts/attachment brackets of the suspension would also fail.

The attachment points for suspension components are subject to special requirements under Appendix C of the testers manual.
